On my first visit to the state my English was very limited. I called Mr. James, my insurance agent, at home to ask him a question about my policy. He was a nice afro-American man. His wife answered the phone. I asked to speak to him, she replied: James passed away not understanding the full meaning of her words, then I asked, "What time will he be home?" She got very irate and asked what I was talking about. At this point I had no idea what she meant, so I politely asked her, Would you please ask him to call me when he gets home ? She then replied with Are you nuts ? I replied: What do nuts have to do with this, as I dont like to eats nuts then she become very hostile and shouted, "James died " It dawned on me what passed away meant ! |
